The Picture Box: A Historical Mystery by Carlo Armenise is a short read the focuses on a Croatian man who leaves the United States to go back to Croatia to solve a mystery he has been presented with. The story begins with Dario Dimitric living in Croatia but having dreams of becoming a famous singer in the United States. Things become more challenging when Croatia goes to war with Yugoslavia. Dario gets recruited to go into the military, but because he has a split heritage he decides to stay out of the war and follow his parents to France. Life changed yet again when he found out that his parents had died in a car accident. After dealing with so many negative events, Dario finally lands in Denver to follow his dream. Little did he know that his life would soon lead him back to Croatia and a mystery he never would have expected.
This is a great book to pick up around lunch time and finish before it is time to start thinking about dinner. The characters are interesting, and the narrative moves along at a fast pace. The mystery presented by the author does a good job of keeping the reader engaged and wanting to know more. I think that fans of history and of mysteries will enjoy this read.
