Over the Fence

“Debbie Schrack has taken two immensely delicate topics involving abuse and examined them sensitively. Through not being overly graphic, this book is ideal for young adults and more mature readers alike. From the very first page, she has your attention and takes you on a journey of revelation. The two main characters are strong and described impressively. You feel as if you have a connection with both of them. By not going into the gory details too deeply, you are allowed to use your imagination as to their circumstances without being overwhelmed by the cruelty. Over the Fence is a must-read that will keep you engaged from start to finish.”

About

Kidnapped from her front yard in Oklahoma eleven years ago, seventeen-year-old Eve Anderson lives a wretched existence in Bell Meade, Minnesota with her abductor, “Papa,” his common-law wife “Mama,” and Honey, Eve’s four-year-old daughter with Papa. Papa keeps the family hidden behind locked doors, boarded-up windows, and an eight-foot tall fence that surrounds their backyard.

Emma Love, also seventeen, recently moved to Bell Meade with her Aunt Vi to take care of her big sister Noelle, who’s in a vegetative state after being savagely beaten by her boyfriend, Jack Armstrong. He is charged with grievous bodily harm, but Emma worries that the popularity and influence of the Armstrong family will keep Noelle from getting the justice she deserves.

When Eve and Emma start talking through the fence that adjoins their backyards, they soon form a connection. Emma finds it comforting to talk to Eve about Noelle, and Eve sees parallels between Noelle’s situation and her own. She acts as Emma’s confidant, but does not reveal her own secrets, for fear of Papa’s wrath if he finds out.

But when Papa decides to marry Eve and move the family to an isolated farmhouse, Eve must risk everything to save herself and Honey. Will she have the courage to escape from Papa before it’s too late? And will Emma have the strength to help her new friend, even as she struggles to save her own sister?

Book Reviews
This was a fascinating and interesting book about, primarily, two women whose lives intersect. One (Emma) is dealing with her sister who has suffered brain trauma, and the other (Eve) is an abducted girl who is imprisoned in a suburban house, living in a nightmarish situation. The two live in houses that share a backyard fence, and they begin talking through the fence. The story moves back and forth between the two women's plotlines, showing how the two worlds are interconnected. There are other plotlines, like Emma's involvement with a local rock group, and Eve's captor who could also be stalking and raping women in a wide multi-state area. It slowly dawns on Emma that Eve is in trouble because Eve won't say very much about her situation; she is scared that her captor will find out about their conversations and harm Emma. Meanwhile, Eve helps Emma cope with her sister's difficulties. The ending is suspenseful and dramatic and wraps up all the loose ends. This was a great book that will hook you. It is well-written and moves fast; you can get caught up in "what's going to happen next" and end up reading it in one sitting. The dialog is really spot-on and feels authentic to the story. I also read Debbie Schrack's previous book (Saving Sophie) and that was great also, so getting this book was a no-brainer. I hope Debbie Schrack writes many more!
